March 23, 2026 – Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, today introduced a new Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based Half-waved LLC (HWLLC) platform along with four controller ICs, further expanding its AC/DC converter and power adapter solutions portfolio. The platform supports power output of 500W and above, making it suitable for a wide range of IoT, industrial, and infrastructure applications.
The new HWLLC converter topology extends ultra-efficient, compact power architectures from 100W-class designs to the 500W-class, enabling next-generation high-speed chargers for devices such as power tools and e-bikes, while overcoming the limitations of traditional topologies in terms of size, thermal performance, and efficiency.
The four controller ICs announced are all built on Renesas’ proprietary Zero Standby Power (ZSP) technology, and include:
RRW11011: A combined controller integrating interleaved Power Factor Correction (PFC) and HWLLC. It employs phase-shift controlled PFC technology to eliminate ripple, reduce component size and cost, while improving current balancing and system stability.
RRW30120: A USB Power Delivery (USB PD) protocol and closed-loop controller supporting up to 240W USB power delivery.
RRW40120: A half-bridge GaN gate driver.
RRW43110: An intelligent synchronous rectification controller.
In a 240W USB EPR power adapter design, the solution achieves a power density of up to 3W/cc and a peak efficiency of 96.5%, enabling designers to meet a wide output range of 5V to 48V while effectively reducing operating temperature.
With a power range of up to 500W, the HWLLC technology addresses a broad charging application market, including large-screen TV displays, vacuum cleaners, power tools, outdoor industrial lighting, and certain high-power appliances such as medical equipment. The technology also helps designers move beyond 100W USB-C charging devices toward 240W USB EPR charging, significantly shrinking the size of bulky chargers for smartphones, laptops, and gaming systems.
Renesas’ compact high-power fast charging technology was recently adopted by Belkin for its GaN chargers. The Belkin Z-Charger features the innovative ZSP chip and leverages Renesas’ advanced SuperGaN® depletion-mode (d-mode) GaN technology.
