Vishay Intertechnology has launched a new highly integrated short-range proximity sensor, the VCNL36829UN, designed specifically for battery-powered consumer devices to improve energy efficiency, flexibility, and detection performance. Built with VCSEL technology, the device integrates a photodiode, ASIC, 16-bit ADC, and intelligent dual I²C slave addresses in a compact transparent mold package measuring just 1.6 mm × 1.0 mm × 0.35 mm, with an integrated isolation wall.
Compared with the previous-generation solution, the VCNL36829UN reduces footprint by 44%, increases proximity detection resolution to 14 bits, and withstands ambient light interference up to 200 klx. With a detection range of 50 mm, standby current of only 5 µA, and typical operating voltage of 1.8 V, it balances excellent proximity performance with low power consumption – ideal for spaceconstrained applications such as TWS earphones, VR/AR headsets, and smart glasses. Its intelligent dual I²C addresses allow connection of two sensors without an external multiplexer, reducing system cost; the programmable interrupt function enables threshold setting, minimizing continuous communication with the MCU to further save power.
The sensor also features an isolation-wall structure that enhances electrical crosstalk immunity, combined with smart cancellation and smart characteristic detection technologies to ensure crosstalk suppression and fast response. The 940 nm VCSEL emits no visible “red-tail” glow and complies with RoHS and Vishay green standards. Beyond wearables, the device is also suited for contactless control in home appliances. The VCNL36829UN is now available in samples and volume production, delivering a smaller, smarter proximitysensing solution for consumer electronics designs.
